Avella picks up endorsement from retail union

Former Councilman Tony Avella was endorsed Thursday by a massive retail union in his bid to challenge state Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose) for his Albany seat.
The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which represents 100,000 workers across the United States and Canada, gave Avella the nod Thursday, calling him “an independent voice for working New Yorkers and taxpayers.”
“He’s exactly the kind of reformer we desperately need in Albany right now,” said Stuart Applebaum, the union’s president.
The union represents a wide range of workers, including retail, manufacturing, service and health care employees.
“I am humbled and honored to be endorsed by RWDSU, which is one of the most respected and active unions in this country,” Avella said.
