Term limits extension headed for voter referendum

The referendum would only affect future Council members — currently sitting members, even those only in their first or second terms, would still be permitted to seek a third term under a so-called grandfather clause.

The bill required a supermajority and only 12 Republicans voted for the act, which proposed giving as much as $7.4 billion to people who were exposed to Ground Zero toxins, including first responders, firefighters, rescue workers, police officers, EMTs, cleanup workers, area residents and schoolchildren. This angered many Democrats, most notably Anthony Weiner (D-Forest Hills), who blew up at House Republicans during his remarks on the House floor.

While others have discussed the likelihood that they will run, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) and city Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Weiner is the only one who filed paperwork July 15 with the city for his bid to become the city’s head honcho.

Queens Republican Party Chairman Phil Ragusa said he tried to dissuade Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s re-election campaign last year from dealing with GOP operative and Forest Hills resident John Haggerty Jr., who was indicted earlier this month on allegations he stole $1.1 million of the mayor’s money and lied to Bloomberg that the money would go to poll watching and ballot security operations.
